History
- 1940s: Sulfolane process originally developed by Shell for use as a speciality solvent to provide a means of purifying butadiene
- 1961: The first Sulfolane unit was built by Shell at Stanlow followed by the commercialisation of aromatic extraction plants using this technology
- 1965: This new process had rapid success and UOP became the exclusive aromatic extraction process licensor
- 1996: Shell Fine Chemicals was acquired by Inspec
- 1998: Laporte acquired Inspec
- 2001 Acquisition by Degussa.

Solvent Properties
Most classes of organic compounds and polymers are soluble in or miscible with Sulfolane. Exceptions include paraffinic and naphthenic compounds, and methacrylate, styrene and vinylident chloride polymers. Sulfolane is completely miscible with aromatic hydrocarbons and water.
Chemical Properties
In general, Sulfolane is unreactive with chemicals such as acids, mercaptans and diolefins, and will not polymerise or decompose under ordinary conditions in the presence of acids or bases. It can be used as a reaction or polymerisation solvent.
